What determines the cost of a mattress? Its materials, yes, but also its warranty, sleep trial, brand name, and any special sleep technologies such as gel-infused foam or lumbar support.

A quick web search can bring up the average price of the mattress type you’re considering to avoid becoming a victim of marketing gimmicks. Less scrupulous sellers, for example, may mark up a mattress to trick a customer into thinking it’s a high-quality bed. What you pay for isn’t always what you get when it comes to mattresses.

The best mattresses provide the right balance of support and comfort—what you need, though, will depend on your sleep position and health conditions. Hot sleepers should look for cooling technologies such as gel memory foam, cutouts, or an innerspring base. Side sleepers will need a mattress with softer, thicker comfort layers (between a soft to a medium feel), which costs more than a firmer mattress as it contains more materials.

A company confident its mattress isn’t likely to sag, for example, will offer coverage for smaller indentations.
