Best Mattress For Couples: Zoma Mattress

Memory Foam vs. Latex Hybrids

Our favorite bed for couples with different sleep styles and body types is our Zoma Mattress. We designed this mattress to improve your sleep and help you wake up feeling refreshed and ready for the day.

The mattress is 12 inches thick and has a medium feel, which works well for couples who are side, back, or combination sleepers. The bed has three layers of foam and is wrapped in a stretchy and breathable AirCloth cover.

The top layer of the Zoma Mattress is 2 inches of gel memory foam with Triangulex™ technology. We created the Triangulex™ technology to add zoned support to the bed, ensuring your shoulders and legs are properly cushioned while your back is supported.

The second layer contains Reactiv™ foam, a latex-like foam designed to add extra bounce and flexibility to the Zoma Mattress. This prevents you from feeling stuck or unable to move in your bed.

The base of the mattress is made from Support+ foam, which promotes the healthy alignment of your spine. Not only that, but the Support+ foam reinforces the top two layers and prevents sags.

Not only did we make the  Zoma Mattress in the USA, but it’s also CertiPUR-US® certified. This means the foams in the mattress don’t contain heavy metals, flame retardants, formaldehyde, phthalates, and are low in VOCs, so your bed will not off-gas (that strong “new” smell).

When you buy one of our Zoma mattresses, you receive a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty covering workmanship defects and sags.

Best Hybrid Mattress For Couples: Zoma Hybrid

Best Mattress for Back Sleepers

If you and your partner need some extra bounce and breathability, the Zoma Hybrid has got you both covered. We added the same recovery foams as our base model, the Zoma Mattress, but our hybrid has a base of pocketed coils that give the bed a slight bounce without increasing motion transfer.

The Zoma Hybrid is 12 inches thick and has a medium, almost medium-soft feel. It contains 2 inches of gel memory foam, 2 inches of Reactiv™ foam, 7 inches of pocketed coils, and 1-inch base foam. Covering all of the layers is our microfiber AirCloth cover.

The bed has minimal motion transfer or noise thanks to the pocketed coils that move independently of each other. The coils absorb movement versus letting it travel across the bed, ensuring both you and your partner sleep undisturbed.

Also, the coils improve air circulation throughout the mattress so you are less likely to feel hot and uncomfortable on the Zoma Hybrid. Paired with the gel memory foam, the coil layer ensures you won’t have to worry about you or your partner overheating. At the bottom of the bed is a thin layer of base foam. It supports the upper layers while also minimizing sags and wear to the bed.

The Zoma Hybrid comes with a 100-night sleep trial, a 10-year warranty, free shipping, and returns.

Best Cooling Mattress for Couples: Zoma Boost

Cooling mattress features are a necessity when you have not one but two sleepers radiating excess body heat at night. While we strive for all of our mattresses to deliver impeccable coolness, the Zoma Boost has 15 inches of material to go beyond standard cooling mattresses. Combining the latest coolness technology with luxurious materials, the Zoma Boost provides a comfortable, supportive, and breathable sleeping surface for both you and your partner.

The ultra-cool, lightweight cover fabric is the first part of the mattress that establishes the bed’s powdery snow comfort. While many fabrics feel thick and sweltering to the touch, the cover fabric is like gentle, icy gossamer on the skin.

The surface also features quilted hypersoft foam for pillowy comfort, it’s pressure-relieving and cooling compression deepened by the second layer of graphite memory foam. This soft pillow top is ready to hug you and your partner’s bodies, easing tension.

The supportive core of the Zoma Boost relies on the bouncy transition offered by Reactiv™ foam and the buoyancy and motion isolation the pocketed coils deliver. The wrapped coils ensure your partners won’t disturb you as they shift in their sleep, and the foam top is also excellent at swallowing motion to prevent it rippling across the bed.

The Zoma Boost is also a great choice if you and your partner need a mattress for an adjustable bed. Even though it’s a thicker mattress, its materials are highly flexible, ready to rise with a bed’s panels and fit the contours of your adjustable frame.

The Zoma Boost comes in a compact delivery box, and the fully expanded mattress has carrying handles along the sides that make it easier for two people to set up together.

Types of Mattresses For Couples

Different types of mattresses offer unique feels and benefits, and each type has drawbacks as well. Let’s discuss different types of mattresses and how they benefit couples.

Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses are a great option if you struggle with any pains or pressure build-up at night thanks to its excellent cradling.

A common issue with memory foam is heat retention. Traditional memory foam mattresses are designed to soften and conform in response to heat, but this leads to the beds becoming quite hot and uncomfortable.

Most memory foam manufacturers today have engineered the foam layers to stay cool while still softening in response to pressure and heat. Staying cool is especially important when sharing a bed, as two people’s body heat can make a bed hotter than normal.

Look for a memory foam bed infused with materials such as gel, copper, or graphite.

Latex

Latex foam is similar to memory foam. However, latex is naturally cooler and springier than memory foam. Latex is durable and supportive, but also great for pressure relief in all types of couples. Latex is generally better for the environment compared to other materials as it is derived from the sap of rubber trees.

With this in mind, some brands use synthetic or blended latex to cut costs, though they aren’t as eco-friendly or as durable as natural latex. However, natural latex can get quite costly compared to synthetic foams.

Innerspring

Nearly everyone has slept on an innerspring mattress before. They contain springy coils and a fluffy comfort layer, generally made from down, cotton, wool, or polyester. Innerspring beds are known for having great airflow and being supportive.

While innerspring mattresses are very popular, this is more because they’re cheap and well-known, not because they’re comfortable or long-lasting.

The coils in innerspring beds are often squeaky, which is disruptive at night. Not only that, but the coils are vulnerable to breaking and poking through your mattress, potentially scratching you. All the coils are connected, which leads to lots of motion transfer.

The comfort layers also commonly flatten, grow lumps, or shift out of place atop your mattress.

Generally, we suggest avoiding innerspring mattresses.

Hybrid

Instead of an innerspring mattress, consider a hybrid mattress. They have coils—like innerspring mattresses—only each coil is separate from the other and they are wrapped in a lightweight fabric. This prevents the pocketed coils from breaking, causing motion transfer, or being noisy.

Rather than a comfort layer made from fibrous fills, hybrid beds contain a latex, poly-foam, or memory foam layer. A foam comfort layer allows for more body and back pain relief, helping you sleep better.

Factors to Consider When Mattress Shopping

It gets overwhelming looking at the endless mattresses on the market, so you may not even know what to look for in your bed. When shopping for you and your partner, there are some key points to keep in mind to find a new mattress that suits you both. This includes a bed’s size, firmness, motion isolation, edge support, and potential noise.

Size

When it comes to the best mattress size for two people, both people must have enough space to stretch out and find the most comfortable sleep position possible.

We recommend couples have at least a queen size mattress, which is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. Anything smaller will leave you packed together and there will be no space for either of you to get comfortable.

Two bigger mattresses are king beds (76 by 80 inches) and California king beds (72 by 84 inches). They’re both long and wide, but bigger than queen beds so you and your partner have extra space to stretch out. Kings and Cal kings are a good option if you have a lot of bedroom space so that there’s still room to walk around.

If you and your partner have different mattress preferences, the best option is to get a split king mattress.

Split kings have the same dimensions as standard king mattresses. However, a split king mattress is a mattress that’s split in half, so the two mattresses are the size of a twin XL (38 by 80 inches).

With a split king mattress, you and your partner can choose the individual types of beds you want, including the materials, firmnesses, and more. Split king mattresses are also compatible with split adjustable bases, so you and your partner can adjust the angles of each side of the bed.

Regardless of the size you choose, couples can save with an adjustable bed and mattress combo.

Mattress SizeDimensions (in)Dimensions (cm)
Queen60 by 80152 by 203.5
King76 by 80193 by 203.5
Split King76 by 80193 by 203.5
California King72 by 84182.88 by 213.36

Firmness

Finding the right mattress firmness for both you and your partner is the next most important part of finding a good mattress. In an ideal world, you and your partner would have the same sleep position and be around the same size, making finding the right mattress firmness simple. Of course, this isn’t reality.

For the majority of people with partners who have different sleep preferences than them, the easiest solution is to choose a split king mattress. This way, you can choose the firmness levels for each side of the bed. However, split kings come at a high cost and they don’t fit in the average bedroom.

If you’re going with a standard king, California king, or queen bed, the next best option is to go for a medium mattress. Medium mattresses have the most balanced feel among the different firmnesses, making them a good choice for back sleepers, side sleepers, and even some stomach sleepers.

Motion Isolation

When sharing a bed, it’s important to choose a bed with proper motion isolation. It’s especially useful if you or your partner are restless or if you have different sleep schedules, meaning you’ll get in and out of bed at different times.

Good motion isolation ensures you and your partner won’t disturb each other when shifting around or getting in and out of bed. This can prevent sleep interruptions, causing your partner to roll out of place, and other annoying issues.

Mattresses with foam—including memory foam, latex, and hybrid beds—often have good motion isolation because of how well foam absorbs pressure and movement.

Edge Support

Especially when you’re sharing a bed, the mattress needs to have solid edge support. Solid edge support means the bed’s edges won’t dip down, protecting you from rolling off of the sides. It also makes it easier to get in and out of because the edges are more stable.

Look for beds with sturdy perimeters, such as memory foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses.

Noise

A squeaky bed can be distracting and disruptive, especially when two people are using it.

Beds made from foam—such as memory foam or latex—are naturally silent, so they won’t be a problem. Conversely, innerspring beds are the biggest culprits for noise because the coils can collide and squeak.

However, if you prefer coil mattresses, consider a hybrid mattress.  Although hybrid mattresses contain coils, they’re wrapped in fabric to prevent noise production so you both sleep undisturbed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average cost of a good queen mattress?

Usually, you can find a queen mattress made of high-quality materials for $500 to $2500. The price variation comes down to the exact type of mattress and the thickness of the materials.

Some queen beds are more or less than this estimate, but overly cheap mattresses are a waste of money as they break down quickly and are generally uncomfortable.

On the other hand, extremely expensive mattresses contain luxurious materials or fabrics, though they don’t make a big difference in terms of comfort.

What is a good size bedroom for a queen bed?

We recommend having a room no smaller than 10 feet by 10 feet to accommodate the dimensions of a queen size bed. There should be enough space in your bedroom for you and your partner to walk around your bed easily. Also, with a bedroom bigger than 10 feet by 10 feet, there’s sufficient space for other furniture, such as a dresser, nightstand, or seats.

Can two adults sleep on a full mattress?

Technically, the dimensions of a full size bed can accommodate two adults, but we don’t recommend two adults get a full mattress. Full mattresses are 54 inches wide by 75 inches long, so each person will get 27 inches of width to themselves, which is less space than they’d have on a twin bed.

If you and another person share a full mattress, you’ll be packed in and won’t have space to stretch out or move comfortably. In a pinch—such as on vacation—a full mattress might work for two adults, but it’s not a long-term solution.

Queen and king mattresses are ideal for two adults.

How many adults can fit in a king size bed?

The dimensions of a king size bed can accommodate two adults. With this in mind, there’s enough space on a king mattress for two adults and one child, for families who co-sleep. However, with one child sharing a king, there may not be enough space for two adults to rest comfortably.

What size bed do most couples have?

Queens beds are the most popular mattress size for couples. Queens provide enough space for two people to sleep on but aren’t ridiculously expensive or large, so they won’t crowd the average bedroom or cost you an arm and a leg.

While queen mattresses are the most popular among couples, king mattresses are usually more comfortable for couples as both people will have extra space to themselves.

Conclusion

Finding the best mattress for you and your partner can be difficult, but with the help of our guide, it doesn’t have to be. Be sure to do your research and prioritize both of your needs before making a decision. Read mattress reviews from both customers and blogs, compare specs, and look for good deals.

At the end of the day, it may take a bit of compromise to purchase the right bed, but you can still find a bed that is comfortable for you both.
